UW to host the 9th Annual Slavic Linguistics Society Conference

The 9th Annual Slavic Linguistics Society Conference will take place at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington September 19-21, 2014.  The conference will take place in the Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities, and invited speakers include Greville Corbett, Roumyana Pancheva, and Olga Yokoyama.

  • GREVILLE CORBETT is a Distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the University of Surrey (United Kingdom). His research interests include – to name only a few – typology, morphology, morphosyntax, Slav(on)ic languages. In his publications, Professor Corbett has addressed linguistic features (in general, as well as in particular) as a central concept in linguistic analysis and the syntax-morphology interface.
  • ROUMYANA PANCHEVA is an Associate Professor of Linguistics and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on syntax and the syntax-semantics interface from both a synchronic and diachronic perspective. Her current research projects include the grammar and processing of degree expressions, tense and aspect and the historical syntax of South Slavic languages.
  • OLGA YOKOYAMA is a Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics at UCLA. Her research covers a broad range of areas in functional syntax and semantics, discourse grammar, discourse modeling, translation theory, gender linguistics, Slavic philology, Russian intonation and word order, poetics, folklore, and what she calls pragmaphilology. Her recent work includes research in cultural and linguistic anthropology based on 19c. Russian peasant letters, as well as studies of reference and human factors responsible for linguistic forms of utterances.
