The major writers of Russian Romanticism: Russian literature, and in many respects the Russian nation, came of age in the Romantic period. This course looks at the sources and achievements of Russian literature between the 1790s and the 1840s, when some of the most imitative and some of the most original Russian writing was produced, and Russia progressed from a cultural backwater to a cultural superpower. Authors studied will include Pushkin and Lermontov, as well as some interesting but less prominent contemporaries, and use will be made of Russian art to build up a picture of this turbulent formative period in the nation’s history.
