The course will cover the war between Poland and the Teutonic Order, the turbulent era of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, the fight of Poles to regain independence in the nineteenth century, and the dark twentieth century.  Those most important episodes of the rich Polish history will be presented through films of well-known Polish directors who represent the post-World War II Polish School of cinema and its achievements. The emphasis will be on the work of Andrzej Wajda, Oscar recipient for his contribution to world cinema.

Representative prose works by leading twentieth-century Polish writers. Polish literature's critique of modern European civilization. The relation of historical memory, collective victimization, and the utopian imagination in Polish literature to political power and national survival.
