This course is an introduction to major works of Russian literature (in translation) that were banned in the Soviet Union. It will explore the ideological developments that shaped the social norms of the Soviet Union and created the need for restrictions on artistic expression. The course will cover major historical events of the 20th century as they relate to the Soviet Union and how these events influenced the formation of institutions for the control of culture and the art these institutions sought to suppress.
