DAY ONE

Friday, November 7, 6:00 p.m.    I’m an Old Communist Hag(2013, 98 min.) dir. Stere Gulea

25 years after the fall of Ceausescu's communist regime, this comedy dares to look at those times with something resembling acceptance and nostalgia. It will screen in Ottawa and Vancouver at the European Union Film Festival this Winter.

DAY TWO

Saturday, November 8, 4:30 p.m.   Romanian Shorts: Tales from the Golden Age (2009, 20 min.); Traffic (2004, 15 min.); Liviu’s Dream (2004, 39 min.); Superman, Spiderman, and Batman (2011, 11 min.); Stopover (2011, 15 min.) This exquisite collection of Romanian shorts combines lyricism with irony, satire with historical truth.

Saturday, November 8, 6:30 p.m.   Anatomy of a Departure (2012, 75 min.) dir. Oliver Tătaru

Director Oliver Tătaru’s autobiographical documentary will resonate with everyone whose family dynamics have been affected by loss and major change.

DAY THREE

Sunday, November 9, 3:45 p.m.   Sundays on Leave (1994, 104 min.) dir. Nae Caranfil

Shot right after the fall of communism in Romania, director Nae Caranfil’s comedy drama - a Romanian-French co-production - depicts like no other film the specific Romanian ability to use humor as a refuge in the face of history.

Sunday, November 9, Of Snails and Men - 6:00 p.m. (2014, 93 min.) dir. Tudor Giurgiu

Set at the beginning of the 1990's, when, after witnessing the fall of Ceausescu's regime, Romanians thought that everything was possible, Tudor Giurgiu’s bittersweet comedy hilariously depicts the difficulty of transplanting the American/capitalist dream into the chaotic Romanian society.
