Ancient and Post Classical Tragedy

The syllabus is not fully worked out at present, but here is what we will be doing:

An analysis of Aristotle's Poetics, which represents one of the most important discussions of Ancient Greek tragedy and has been influential in theories of tragedy for many centuries.

Ancient plays: Oedipus, Hippolytus, Medea, Bacchae

Post Classical plays: King Lear, Miss Julie, Ghosts, Desire under the Elms, Streetcar Named Desire, The Piano Lesson, M. Butterfly.

There are no exams. Rather grades will be based on participation in class (20%), three reflection essays (30%), a final project to be described (50%), for which there will be two in class workshops.

Catalog Description:
Studies in literary and cultural history, spanning multiple periods. Topics vary.
