This course will focus on the study of films by a distinct group of directors, namely, those who began their careers in the so-called “Second World” of post-World War II, socialist Eastern Europe, and then moved to the West and made some of the most celebrated Hollywood movies of the 1960s and 70s, and beyond to the present day. These directors include Miloš Forman, Agnieszka Holland, Dušan Makavejev, Roman Polanski, István Szabó, and others. All films will be available on Canvas.
Three quizzes and some ungraded writing. No prerequisites.
Catalog Description:
Studies major East European film makers who left their countries at some point in their careers. Compares East European and Western production of those directors who worked partially in the West. Offered: jointly with CMS 423.
