For a paper titled Brothers by Blood, Strangers by Culture: Balkanism and Europeanism as Cultural Justifications for European Independence, UW student Gregory Chapman, a double major in International Studies and Slavic Languages, has been awarded the 2014 Joseph Velikonja Undergraduate Prize sponsored by the Society for Slovene Studies.  In his paper Gregory explores the rhetoric used by prominent Slovenes involved in the 1980s independence movement to set Slovenia apart from its southern neighbors, fellow constituent republics in the Socialist Federated Republic of Yugoslavia.
