RUSSIAN LITERATURE

AND CULTURE

(1917-present)

We will take a sweeping tour of the dynamic literary and cultural scene of 20th/21st-century Russia, from the Bolshevik Revolution, Diaspora and Socialist Realist period, through the purges and post-Stalin ‘Thaw’, to the Stagnation, Perestroika and Post-Soviet eras. Lectures and discussion will focus on important literary texts of the 20th/21st centuries, as well as on relevant films, music and paintings. Lectures will also impart vital information to aid your appreciation of this literature, and thus form an important part of this course – please do your best not to miss them or our class discussions on the material.  By course’s end you should have a basic grounding in the major trends, authors and literary canon of Russian literature of this period.
